Direction Not Instruction

Anyone can follow instructions—performing a well-understood task step-by-step until it is completed. However, most challenges a startup faces are not well-understood.

It’s best to build systems that lead to making the right choices most of the time and optimize for hiring people that work from directives (like goals, policies, roadmap). This enables people to solve problems they haven’t encountered before without every detail needed to be figured out.
