46% of Developers Code Comes From GitHub Copilot

A blog post from GitHub says that their code assistance tool, Copilot, is behind 46% of developers' code, up from 27%. For Java, that number is 61%.

I might be missing something but this is an astonishing change. In two years, generative AI has fundamentally changed where code comes from. What does it mean if these numbers climb to 90%? Will it impact real productivity or merely shift the effort from writing to prompting and editing?
